Elephant Sequin Caps Bronze

Galerie 21 is paying homage to a relic of the past: the handwoven sequin caps that rose to popularity during the 1980s and 90s touristic boom in northern Thailand, near the border with Myanmar.
 
Made of velvet and decorated with embroideries and sequined elephant motifs, these caps reflect the elephant’s sacred status in both cultures. In Thai culture, the elephant symbolizes strength, wisdom, and good fortune. Deeply respected, it represents spiritual power, loyalty, and a strong connection to both Buddhism and national identity.
 
The caps are crafted using the same traditional techniques practiced by northern Thai tribes, with two types of sequins, including recycled ones from Indian saris. The velvet base adds depth, and the elephants are lightly stuffed to create a raised, voluminous effect.
 
Each cap is embroidered and assembled by hand, making every piece unique, more like a small artwork than a standard product. Variations from the original model are to be expected. These artisanal imperfections are part of the charm and spirit of the project. Do not expect the precision of mass-produced ready to wear. This cap is meant to be seen as a wearable artifact.

GALERIE21は、過去の文化やクラフトにリスペクトを込めています。そのひとつが、1980〜90年代にタイ北部、特にミャンマーとの国境近くで観光ブームとともに人気を博した、手織りのスパンコールキャップです。
 
ベルベット生地に、刺繍とスパンコールで象のモチーフをあしらったこのキャップは、タイとミャンマーの文化において特別な意味を持つ“象”を象徴しています。タイでは象は、力や知恵、幸運を意味し、精神的な強さや忠誠心、仏教や国家との深い関わりも表しているんです。
 
キャップは、タイ北部の民族に代々伝わる伝統的な技法で丁寧に作られていて、2種類のスパンコールを使っています。そのうちのひとつは、インドのサリーからリユースされたもの。ベルベットの柔らかな質感が奥行きを出していて、象の部分には軽く詰め物が入っているので、ふっくらとした立体感のある仕上がりになっています。
 
それぞれのキャップは手作業で刺繍され、組み立てられており、一般的な製品というよりも小さなアートピースのような存在です。掲載されているモデルとは異なる部分がある場合がありますが、それも魅力のひとつです。こうした手工芸ならではの不完全さこそが、このプロジェクト全体の価値を高めています。既製品のような完璧さは期待せず、身に着けるアーティファクトとして捉えてください。
