Elephant Haniwa by Dogu Nova Studio

Created exclusively for Galerie 21, this Elephant Haniwa was imagined by Yuthanan and handcrafted by the artisan behind Dogu Nova Studio, a family-run atelier based in Gunma Prefecture.
 
The piece takes inspiration from the ancient Japanese tradition of Haniwa, terracotta figures produced during the Kofun period and placed around burial mounds. Its form is directly inspired by traditional Horse Haniwa, reinterpreting their distinctive saddle, harness and decorative details through the silhouette of an elephant.
 
Crafted from Shigaraki red clay, each piece is individually shaped and finished by hand in Gunma. The natural texture of the clay and subtle irregularities created during the making process give every elephant its own character.
 
Exclusively made for Galerie 21 in a limited edition of 11 pieces.
